The University of Maryland’s Department of Entomology will not host the 2018 Interstate Pest Management Conference due to budget constraints. We are pleased to announce that the Maryland State Pest Control Association will present future Interstate Conferences.
The Interstate was first conceived under a different name in the mid-1970s by Dr. Gene Wood, Professor of Entomology at the University of Maryland, and colleagues from Virginia and the District of Columbia. Details have been lost regarding Conference history during those early years, although there are still a few annual IPMC participants who attended the very first meeting. While a PhD student at UMD, Nancy Breisch began assisting Dr. Wood with the Interstate in 1983. In 1988, with retirement imminent, Gene arbitrarily decided to designate his last Interstate as its “10th Anniversary” because it would look stately on the commemorative patch he designed for the conference that year. The three stars in the original logo representing MD, DC & VA, were inspired by the Subaru he was currently driving. The following year, Dr. Breisch assumed responsibility of Conference Chairman organizing the Interstate, and in homage to Gene, retained the three stars in a modernized logo.
Dr. Barbara Thorne joined the Department and the Interstate in 1992, adding her enthusiastic leadership, encyclopedic knowledge of termite biology and research, as well as our name change from the Interstate Pest Control Conference to the Interstate Pest Management Conference.
Throughout the last 40+ years, the IPMC has worked to increase your awareness of current science, technology, and application updates regarding urban pest populations, treatment alternatives to better protect applicators, their clients, and the environment, and to create conducive conditions to learn from expert speakers, peruse new offerings from industry Exhibitors, and socialize with peers while fulfilling recertification requirements.
Thank you to our vendors who have supported the Interstate with speakers, financial contributions, and their reliable good will on the exhibit floor! Every program acknowledged Departmental staff who had a part in making sure the meeting was a success but special thanks are due to Joanne Lewis (now happily retired) for making things better every year of the 25 she worked tirelessly on the Interstate.
Finally we would like to thank our audience for the years of participation, insightful questions, and dedication to making the right choices in an industry that quietly protects our citizens and the structures that support them.
The Maryland State Pest Control Association is seriously considering leading a large annual recertification meeting. Watch their website for developments: http://www.marylandpest.org/
